Focus 02 · Gut & digestion

A calmer gut, built from food first.

Bloating, irregularity and discomfort are common — and rarely fixed by the newest probiotic. Most of the durable improvement comes from fibre variety, meal rhythm, hydration, sleep and stress. We start there, and we keep it kind.

  • Add fibre variety without triggering a week of bloating
  • Understand which symptoms need a doctor, not an app
  • Build meals you actually like eating, repeatedly

Educational guidance only — never a replacement for your doctor.

Diversity of plants beats the price of the probiotic, most of the time.

What actually helps

Feed the microbiome you already have.

Your gut bacteria respond to what arrives regularly, not to a single heroic week. Variety of plant fibres, some fermented food, enough water and enough sleep move the needle far more than most supplements on sale.

Go slowly on fibre

Raising fibre too fast is the usual cause of the bloating people blame on the food itself. Add in small weekly steps.

Fermented foods, small and daily

Yoghurt, kefir, fermented vegetables. Small consistent servings look better in trials than occasional large ones.

Stress is a digestive input

The gut–brain link is real. Sleep and stress load change symptoms as reliably as diet in many people.

How it works

Three steps, at your own pace.

Fresh whole foods prepared at home
Step 01

Map your baseline

A week of simple notes: what you ate, how you slept, what your gut did. Patterns show up faster than you expect.

Warm plate of vegetables and grains
Step 02

Add before you remove

We add plants, fibre variety and fluids first. Elimination is a last resort, and ideally a supervised one.

Step 03

Keep what works

Ten reliable meals beat a hundred aspirational ones. We build your short list and rotate it.

Evidence, plainly

What the research does — and doesn’t — support.

“Everyone needs a probiotic.”
Specific strains help specific conditions. For general symptoms, food-based fibre and fermented foods are the better first move.
“Bloating means intolerance.”
Often it’s a rapid fibre increase, swallowed air, or an irregular eating pattern. Real intolerance needs a proper test, not a guess.
“Gluten-free is healthier by default.”
Only if you have coeliac disease or a diagnosed sensitivity. Otherwise it often reduces fibre intake.
Where to start

Pick the next small thing.

Outcomes gallery

Ten guts that calmed down.

No cleanses, no elimination marathons. Just fibre, rhythm, sleep and — where it mattered — a proper medical review.

Elimination diets started without a reason
Laura S.34, Manchester
I stopped cutting out food groups
“I'd eliminated dairy, then gluten, then onions, and felt worse each time. Thrive made the case for adding fibre and variety before removing anything. My symptoms halved and my diet got bigger, not smaller.”
Chioma A.31, Lagos
The bloating had a boring cause
“I was convinced something was seriously wrong after months of discomfort. It turned out to be eating too fast, too late, and almost no fibre. Three unremarkable changes and it settled.”
Ben T.27, Leeds
Properly tested for coeliac first
“I was about to go gluten-free on a whim, which would have wrecked the test. Thrive was clear about testing before eliminating. That single line saved me a year of not knowing.”
Nkechi O.38, Abuja
Thirty plants a week, not a cleanse
“I'd been eyeing an expensive detox programme when I found this. Counting different plants each week turned into a game with my kids. My digestion and my cooking both improved.”
Emily R.29, Bristol
IBS with an actual plan
“Years of being told it's stress and sent home. The low-FODMAP explanation here was honest about it being temporary and best done with a dietitian. Structured properly, it finally worked.”
Fibre-rich bowl of beans, greens and seeds
Tunde B.46, Ibadan
My reflux settled without pills
“I'd been on omeprazole for two years and nobody had reviewed it. Meal timing, portion size and a raised bed head did most of the work. My doctor and I stepped it down together.”
Sam K.35, Toronto
Fermented foods, no supplements
“I was spending a fortune on probiotic capsules with no idea if they did anything. Thrive explained where the evidence is stronger for food than pills. Yoghurt and kimchi cost a fraction and I feel better.”
Yemi A.42, Lagos
Eating slowly changed everything
“It sounded like the least scientific advice on the site. Twenty minutes per meal instead of eight, and the after-dinner bloating went. I still can't quite believe it was that.”
Patricia N.55, Dublin
Constipation solved with fibre and water
“I'd tried every laxative on the shelf and none of it stuck. Increasing fibre gradually, with enough water, was the part I'd always got wrong. Regular for the first time in years.”
Marcus D.33, Atlanta
No expensive microbiome test
“I'd nearly paid for one when I read the section explaining their limits. It saved me a lot of money and pointed me at things that actually change outcomes. Honesty like that is rare online.”
Woman eating an unhurried meal at a sunlit table
Aisha M.30, Abuja
My IBD flare-ups are fewer
“Nothing here pretended diet could replace my medication, which is why I trusted it. The guidance sat alongside my consultant's plan rather than against it. Fewer flares and far less fear.”
Oliver P.39, London
Stress was in my stomach
“I'd never connected deadlines with cramps until it was spelled out. The gut-brain section made sense of a decade of symptoms. Managing the stress did more than any diet change.”
Grace O.58, Vancouver
Red flags I nearly ignored
“I'd been putting off mentioning a change in my bowel habits. The list of symptoms that need a doctor made me stop delaying. Investigated, treated early, and I'm fine.”
Dele A.41, Lagos
Travel belly under control
“Every work trip used to cost me three uncomfortable days. Hydration, familiar breakfasts and a bit of routine were all it took. Simple, practical, no products involved.”
Hannah W.28, Calgary
Lactose, but not dairy-free
“I assumed intolerance meant cutting dairy out entirely and grieving cheese. Thrive explained tolerance thresholds and how to test my own. I eat most of it, in the right amounts.”
Fermented foods and fresh produce on a board

Fibre added slowly, as advised
“My first attempt at eating more fibre went badly and I gave up. The advice to build over weeks rather than days made all the difference. No bloating this time.”
Bisi F.37, Port Harcourt
My child's tummy aches eased
“Recurrent stomach pain at school with no clear cause was exhausting for us both. The plain-English explanation helped me talk to our GP properly. Reassurance, then a simple plan that worked.”
Sophie L.26, Nottingham
Off the elimination merry-go-round
“Each new food I banned felt like control and delivered nothing. Reintroducing carefully, as described, was frightening and correct. My diet and my mood both recovered.”
Chidi N.44, Enugu
H. pylori found and treated
“Months of upper stomach pain that I'd been treating with antacids. The prompt to get tested rather than self-manage was the turning point. One course of treatment and it was gone.”
Ryan M.32, Chicago
Better than my gut-health podcast
“I'd been listening to hours of content that all ended in a product. This ends in a plate of food and a caveat. That's the difference.”
Woman smiling with fresh produce at a market
Amina S.40, Abuja
Regular meals, regular gut
“Skipping breakfast and eating a huge dinner was my normal. Spreading it out evenly settled the whole system. It cost nothing and took two weeks.”
Kelvin O.34, Nairobi
Post-antibiotic recovery
“I felt wrecked for a month after a course and thought I was imagining it. Practical guidance on food and patience, without a supplement upsell. Back to normal, no panic buying.”
Rachel B.31, Birmingham
Bloating wasn't gluten
“I'd been avoiding bread for a year with mixed results at best. Proper testing was negative and the real trigger turned out to be portion size. I've got toast back.”
Uche E.48, Lagos
Walking after meals
“Ten minutes after dinner sounded far too small to matter. It's the most consistent thing I do now and my evenings are comfortable. My blood sugar improved as a bonus.”
John H.61, Glasgow
Diverticulitis, managed calmly
“The internet had me terrified after my first episode. Thrive's explanation was measured and matched what my consultant said. Fibre in recovery, not fear.”
Man smiling over a colourful bowl of food
Zainab A.33, Abuja
Kefir instead of capsules
“I swapped a fifteen-pound-a-month subscription for a bottle from the supermarket. Same intention, better evidence, less money. Six months in and my mornings are settled.”
Kemi T.39, Lagos
My daughter's constipation eased
“We'd been stuck in a cycle of pain and avoidance for months. Gradual fibre, more water, and a relaxed routine at the same time each day. It resolved without drama.”
Alex F.29, Seattle
Understanding my own triggers
“Instead of guessing I kept the simple food and symptom log described here. Two clear patterns showed up within three weeks. Knowing beats eliminating.”
Margaret D.57, Ottawa
The colonoscopy I stopped avoiding
“I'd deferred the screening letter twice out of squeamishness. Reading what it's for, plainly, was enough to make me book. Clear result and a lot less anxiety.”
Ngozi B.45, Lagos
Comfortable for the first time in years
“I'd normalised feeling heavy and uncomfortable after every meal. Nothing here was dramatic — fibre, pace, timing, stress, water. Together, over three months, it gave me my days back.”

Questions

Before you begin.

When should I see a doctor?

Blood in stool, unexplained weight loss, persistent pain, or a sudden lasting change in bowel habit. Those are medical, not lifestyle, questions.

Do I have to count fibre grams?

No. Counting different plants in a week is easier and tracks the same idea.

Is dairy a problem?

For most people, no. Lactose intolerance is real but variable — fermented dairy is often tolerated even when milk isn’t.

Start with one extra plant a day.
