After 35, the things that used to look after themselves — energy, waistline, sleep, mood, libido — start asking for a plan. This is that plan: the handful of checks and habits with the best evidence behind them, and none of the noise.
None of these need a clinic subscription or a supplement stack. They need one honest look, then a routine you can hold for a year.
94cm
Waist measurement above which cardiometabolic risk rises sharply in most men
2×/wk
Resistance training sessions linked to lower all-cause mortality
35
Age from which testosterone typically declines about 1% a year — slowly, not suddenly
Built for the body you actually have.
Three levers do most of the work. Everything else is optimisation you can add later — or skip without missing much.
Get the numbers on paper
Most men's health problems in their late thirties are silent for years: blood pressure, lipids, HbA1c, and a waistline that crept up two centimetres a year. A single panel changes the entire conversation.
Blood pressure, lipids, HbA1c and waist — the core four
Testosterone only tested with symptoms, in a morning sample, twice
Baseline first, opinions second
Lift twice, walk daily
Resistance training protects muscle, insulin sensitivity and bone as testosterone gently declines. Walking handles the rest. Two sessions a week beat five you abandon by March.
Two 40-minute strength sessions, six to eight compound lifts
7,000–9,000 steps most days — the range where risk curves flatten
Progress logged, not guessed
Eat and sleep like it matters
Short sleep raises appetite, blunts training recovery and lowers morning testosterone in controlled studies. Protein and fibre at each meal make the rest of it far less effortful.
1.2–1.6g protein per kg on training weeks
Alcohol on fewer nights, and never as the wind-down
Seven hours minimum before optimising anything else
The honest version
Most of it isn’t testosterone.
Low energy, low mood and low drive are far more often sleep debt, alcohol, untreated stress, weight gain or an undiagnosed metabolic problem. Clinical hypogonadism is real and treatable — but it is diagnosed, not assumed, and never from an online quiz.
Bloods with your GP, a waist measurement, a week of sleep and drink notes. Nothing changes yet.
Step 2
Two lifts, one walk habit
A simple programme you can run in a home gym or a busy one, plus a step floor you hit on bad days.
Step 3
Review at twelve weeks
Re-measure, re-test where it matters, and adjust once. Consistency beats constant tinkering.

Daniel A.41, Lagos★★★★★
Finally stopped guessing
“I'd convinced myself I needed testosterone and was ready to pay a clinic for it. Thrive walked me through the unglamorous basics first — sleep, alcohol, two lifts a week — and asked me to give it six weeks before spending anything. Six weeks later I felt twenty-nine again, and I never made the appointment.”
Marcus B.38, Toronto★★★★★
The bloods were the unlock
“My blood pressure had been creeping up for years and nobody had sat me down about it. Thrive Wellness Network told me exactly which numbers to ask for and what they meant once I had them. Two changes to my week and it's back in normal range, confirmed on the same machine.”
Femi O.44, Houston★★★★★
Two sessions a week, kept for a year
“Every plan I'd tried before assumed I had five free evenings and a gym I loved. This one asked for two sessions and told me exactly what to do in them. Eleven months in and I've not missed a fortnight, which has never happened before.”
Chidi N.36, Abuja★★★★★
Energy back without a supplement shelf
“No powders, no stacks, nobody trying to sell me a subscription at the end. Just an explanation of why I was flat and a short list of things to change in order. Rare online, and it's the reason I've stayed subscribed.”
Peter L.52, Leeds★★★★★
My doctor took me seriously
“I'd been going in vague and coming out with a shrug for two years. I walked in with the question list from the Thrive guide, and for the first time the appointment had a direction. I left with tests booked instead of reassurance.”
Aaron K.39, Chicago★★★★★
Sleep first was the right order
“I'd tried supplements, cold showers, fasting — everything except actually going to bed at a sensible hour. Thrive made the case that sleep sets the ceiling for the rest, so I fixed that alone for a month. Turns out that was most of the problem.”
Tunde S.47, Port Harcourt★★★★★
Strength came back quicker than I expected
“At forty-seven I'd started moving like someone who expected to be injured. Eight weeks of proper progressive lifting, three exercises done well, and I stopped feeling breakable. Carrying things up stairs stopped being an event.”
Greg M.55, Calgary★★★★★
No hype, just evidence
“Thrive is the only wellness site I read that will tell me plainly when the science isn't settled yet. That single habit makes me trust everything else on the page. I've unsubscribed from four newsletters since I found it.”
Ravi P.42, Birmingham★★★★★
Cut four drinking nights to one
“I never thought of myself as drinking much — it was just two after work, most nights. Seeing what it was doing to my sleep and my morning made the decision for me. The difference in how I wake up is almost embarrassing.”
Ismail A.45, Kano★★★★★
Lost 9kg without a crash diet
“Protein at each meal, a daily walk that fitted around work, and a proper bedtime. That was genuinely the whole plan, and it was boring enough to keep doing. Nine kilos down and it hasn't come back this time.”
Colin D.58, Dublin★★★★★
My blood sugar is finally stable
“I'd been handed a printout of results for years without ever understanding what they were telling me. Thrive explained the numbers in plain language and what actually moves them. My last set came back normal for the first time since 2019.”
Jason W.37, Atlanta★★★★★
Better than the clinic newsletter I paid for
“I was paying a private clinic for a monthly update that mostly advertised their own services. This is free, better sourced, and it actually answers the question in the headline instead of teasing it. That comparison says everything.”
Emeka U.43, Enugu★★★★★
Stopped the 3am wake-ups
“Waking at three every night had become normal and I'd stopped mentioning it to anyone. Cooler room, last drink earlier, and consistent wake time — the three things Thrive said to try first. Two weeks and the pattern broke.”
Martin H.60, Vancouver★★★★★
I train around my knees now, not against them
“Every trainer I'd met told me to push through it, and every time I paid for that a fortnight later. Somebody finally explained load management in words I could act on. I'm training more consistently than I have in a decade.”
Sam T.40, Manchester★★★★★
My wife noticed before I did
“She asked what had changed about three weeks in, and I hadn't clocked it myself. Mood, patience with the kids, energy after seven in the evening — all of it lifted quietly. That's when I knew it was working.”

Victor E.34, Lagos★★★★★
Practical for a shift worker
“Almost every piece of health advice I read assumes a nine-to-five and regular daylight. This didn't, and it gave me an anchoring routine that survives nights. First guidance I've been able to actually follow in eight years of rotating shifts.”
Nathan R.49, Seattle★★★★★
The checklist saved me a wasted appointment
“Ten minutes with a GP goes nowhere if you don't know what to ask for. I went in knowing which tests were reasonable and which were a waste of everyone's time. We got further in that one visit than in the previous three.”
Bola I.46, Abuja★★★★★
Testosterone wasn't the problem
“I was sure it was, and I'd already found a clinic happy to agree with me for a fee. Thrive laid out what low testosterone actually looks like and what to rule out first. My results came back completely normal — that reading saved me a fortune.”
Dele F.51, London★★★★★
Blood pressure down 14 points
“Salt, alcohol, weight and walking, addressed in that order over four months. Nothing dramatic, nothing I had to buy. Same doctor, same cuff, fourteen points lower.”
Owen C.33, Bristol★★★★★
I read it every week now
“The Weekly Root is the only newsletter that doesn't go straight to my archive folder. It's short, it's sourced, and it tells me what to do with what I've just read. Ten minutes on a Sunday that consistently earns its place.”
Kelvin J.38, Nairobi★★★★★
Recovery finally makes sense
“I'd spent years treating rest days as a character failure and wondering why I kept stalling. Thrive explained adaptation in a way that made rest feel like part of the training. My numbers have gone up since I started doing less.”
Andrew Y.56, Boston★★★★★
Simple language, serious sourcing
“It manages to respect your intelligence without drowning you in jargon or study numbers. Every claim links to something real, and the caveats are right there in the paragraph. That balance is much harder to find than it should be.”
Uche M.44, Ibadan★★★★★
Gut issues settled in a month
“I'd been on the verge of cutting out another food group when I found this. Instead it was fibre, meal timing and eating slowly — no elimination spiral, no expensive testing. Symptoms halved inside a month and stayed there.”
Robert V.50, Ottawa★★★★★
Back to running at 50
“I'd tried to come back twice before and torn something both times within a month. The build here was slower than my ego wanted and that was exactly the point. Six months in, still running, still uninjured — a first for me.”
Karim Z.35, Dubai★★★★★
My focus at work improved
“I'd blamed my concentration on age, on the job, on everything except my bedtime. Turns out most of it was accumulated sleep debt and a very late coffee habit. Fixing both did more for my afternoons than any productivity system ever has.”
Lanre B.41, Lagos★★★★★
I stopped buying rubbish
“Between the ads and the podcasts I'd built up a cupboard of half-used bottles. The 'don't waste your money on this' sections told me plainly which of them do nothing. That alone has paid for itself several times over.”
Doug R.48, Denver★★★★★
Good for men who hate wellness content
“No candles, no vibes, no one telling me to honour my journey. Just what's happening in your body, what the evidence says, and what to do on Monday. It's the only thing in this space I've been able to stomach.”
Paul G.62, Glasgow★★★★★
Honest about what it can't fix
“There's a line in one of the guides saying flatly that some things need a doctor, not a newsletter. That willingness to send you elsewhere is exactly why I trust the rest of it. Most sites would rather keep you reading.”
Segun A.39, Accra★★★★★
Down two waist sizes
“Nine months of small, unexciting changes that I never had to white-knuckle. My trousers are two sizes down and, more importantly, they've stayed there through a holiday and a Christmas. That's never been true before.”
Eric N.45, Toronto★★★★★
Worth the ten minutes a week
“I read it with coffee on a Sunday and change one thing at a time. Individually none of it feels significant; a year later the difference is obvious in my bloods and my energy. Small changes compounding is the entire model, and it holds up.”
Victor E.34, Lagos★★★★★

The four questions that come up in almost every message we get about men’s health — answered plainly, with no product at the end of them.
I’m in my forties and constantly tired. Where do I actually start?
With a fortnight of honest baseline: sleep hours, alcohol nights, steps, and how often you eat protein. Nine times out of ten the fix sits in that data, and it costs nothing to collect.
Will strength training help if I’ve never lifted?
It is the single highest-yield change for most men over 35 — muscle mass, insulin sensitivity, bone, mood. Two sessions a week of basic compound work is enough to start.
Should I get my testosterone tested?
Only if you have persistent symptoms — low libido, morning fatigue, loss of muscle. It needs an early-morning sample, repeated, interpreted alongside other bloods by a doctor. A single number in isolation means very little.
Do I need supplements?
Vitamin D if you're deficient or live somewhere with little winter sun. Creatine has strong evidence for strength. Almost everything marketed to men over 35 does not.
How much does drinking really matter?
More than most men expect. Alcohol fragments sleep, raises blood pressure and lowers next-day training quality. Cutting nights, not just units, tends to be the change people feel first.
Is this a replacement for my doctor?
No. This is educational guidance to help you ask better questions. Chest pain, unexplained weight loss or persistent symptoms go to a clinician, promptly.
Start with one honest baseline.
