Calm portrait of a woman in her forties
Focus 06 · Hormonal balance

Steady mood.Steady cycle.Steady you.

Cycle changes, perimenopause, PCOS, thyroid shifts — hormonal health is where women are most often dismissed and most heavily marketed to. We work from symptoms and evidence, in plain language, and we tell you clearly when the answer is a doctor rather than a habit.

What the evidence actually says.

Hormonal symptoms are common, treatable and badly served by internet advice. These are the anchors worth knowing before you spend anything.

Support the system, not the symptom alone.

Sleep, strength, protein and stress load change how hormonal symptoms feel — and they make medical treatment work better, not redundant.

Name the pattern first

Cycle length, symptom timing, sleep, mood and bleeding tracked for two or three cycles tell a clinician more in one page than months of guesswork. It is also the fastest route to being taken seriously.

  • Two to three cycles of simple tracking
  • Flag the red lines: very heavy bleeding, severe pain, sudden change
  • Bring the log to the appointment
Woman resting calmly at home

Protein, strength and bone

Falling oestrogen accelerates bone and muscle loss. Resistance training and adequate protein are the two interventions with the clearest long-term payoff through the transition — and they help sleep and mood along the way.

  • Two strength sessions a week, progressively loaded
  • Protein at each meal; calcium and vitamin D checked
  • Weight-bearing movement most days
Journalling with tea in morning light

Sleep, heat and the nervous system

Night sweats and 3am waking drive most of the daytime fog people blame on hormones alone. Cool rooms, consistent timing, alcohol earlier or less, and CBT for insomnia all have trial support.

  • Cool, dark, consistent — the unglamorous basics first
  • CBT-I is first-line for persistent insomnia, ahead of sedatives
  • Discuss HRT/MHT with a clinician on the facts, not the headlines

Where habits end

You should not have to argue for care.

Heavy bleeding, debilitating pain, sudden cycle changes, or symptoms that flatten your life deserve investigation — thyroid, iron, PCOS and perimenopause all have real diagnostic pathways. Habits support treatment. They are not a substitute for it, and neither is a supplement subscription.

Three steps to steadier ground.

Step 1

Track two cycles

Symptoms, bleeding, sleep and mood. Patterns you can show, rather than describe from memory.

Step 2

Build the base

Two strength sessions, protein at each meal, a sleep window you protect. These change how everything else lands.

Step 3

Get properly assessed

Take the log to a clinician and ask directly about thyroid, iron, PCOS or MHT where relevant.

Ten women, ten steadier seasons.

Perimenopause and hormonal change rarely resolve in a week. These are the shifts members reported over a full season of steady work.

Two years of being dismissed, then a diagnosis
“I'd been told it was stress, then that it was just my age, twice in the same year. Tracking three cycles the way Thrive sets out gave me something concrete to put in front of a doctor. One appointment with that data and I finally had an answer.”
Helen W.47, Manchester
Strength training changed my forties
“Nobody had ever told me that lifting was the single best thing I could do for my bones. I started with two sessions and a set of dumbbells in the spare room. Two years later I'm stronger than I was at thirty and I refuse to drop it.”
Rosa M.45, Chicago
The 3am waking stopped
“I'd accepted waking at three as part of being forty-five and just lay there most nights. Cooler bedroom, last drink earlier, same wake time every day — unglamorous and free. It was almost gone within a fortnight.”
Grace E.44, Lagos
Perimenopause finally explained
“For three years I had a collection of symptoms nobody would join up for me. Thrive Wellness Network named it clearly, explained why it looks so different from woman to woman, and told me what was worth tracking. Understanding it changed how I felt about all of it.”
Priya S.42, Leicester
I went in prepared
“Ten minutes with a GP disappears very fast when you're trying to describe two years in one sentence. The question list gave me a structure and stopped me apologising my way through the appointment. We got somewhere for the first time.”
Woman smiling in soft natural light

Energy back in six weeks
“I'd been exhausted for the best part of a year and had put it down to work and children. Thrive listed iron as one of the first things to rule out, and nobody had ever checked mine. Six weeks after treatment I felt like a different person.”
Karen L.51, Sydney
No hormone-balancing pills sold to me
“Every other site I landed on had a supplement to sell me by the second paragraph. This one says plainly that most 'hormone balancing' blends are unevidenced. That honesty is the whole reason I subscribed and stayed.”
Yemi A.35, Ibadan
Cycle tracking without the anxiety
“The apps I'd tried turned my body into a dashboard I felt judged by. Three columns in a notebook — bleeding, sleep, mood — was enough to see the pattern. No subscription, no notifications, and far less anxiety.”
Fiona D.49, Edinburgh
My sleep is unrecognisable
“I hadn't had a full week of decent sleep since my youngest was born. Fixing my wind-down and the temperature of the room did more than any supplement I'd bought. And with the sleep came back my patience with absolutely everyone.”
Mariam K.43, Kano
Down 7kg and holding
“Protein at breakfast and a walk most days — that was genuinely the extent of it. No app, no points, nothing I had to buy or cancel. Seven kilos down and it's stayed off through a full year, which is new for me.”
Woman writing in a cycle-tracking journal
Susan P.53, Ottawa
HRT decision made calmly
“I'd read enough frightening headlines to have written the idea off completely. Thrive explained where that fear came from and what current guidance actually says. I went into the conversation understanding the trade-offs and made the decision calmly, with my doctor.”
Tolu B.31, Lagos
PCOS management that fits my life
“Everything I'd been given before was a crash plan dressed up as a lifestyle change. This started with insulin sensitivity and strength work, and explained why that order matters. My cycles are the most regular they've been since my early twenties.”
Anita R.46, Houston
The brain fog lifted
“I was forgetting words mid-sentence in meetings and quietly panicking about it. It came down to sleep debt and low iron, addressed in that order over a couple of months. The fog lifted and I stopped assuming the worst.”
Margaret H.55, Bristol
Bone health taken seriously
“Every article I'd read about menopause and bones ended with 'ask your doctor' and nothing else. This one told me what loading actually means and how to start safely at my age. At fifty-five I'm lifting properly for the first time in my life.”
Chioma N.40, Abuja
Honest about the evidence gaps
“It will tell you outright when a study is small, industry-funded or simply not good enough yet. That's the opposite of how the rest of this internet works. Knowing what isn't known has made me much harder to sell to.”

“I used to write off a week each cycle and just endure it quietly. Tracking three cycles showed me exactly where the pain and the crash landed, so I could plan and treat earlier. Small changes, but my month is mine again.”
Bisi F.37, Lagos
Gut symptoms halved
“I was one bad week away from cutting out another food group entirely. Instead it was fibre, meal spacing and eating without my laptop open. Symptoms roughly halved in a month, and I didn't have to shrink my diet to do it.”
Nadia H.41, Dubai
I stopped panic-buying supplements
“My bathroom shelf looked like a pharmacy and I couldn't have told you what half of it was for. Thrive walked through which ones have evidence behind them and which are worth testing for first. I'm down to two, both because a blood test said so.”
Emily S.36, Manchester
Reading this feels like a calm friend

Diane C.52, Cardiff
Hot flushes down noticeably
“They aren't gone, and Thrive was honest that they might not be. But I understand what's driving them, which triggers are mine, and what genuinely helps. They've gone from running my day to being an inconvenience.”

“Most advice for new mothers seems written for someone with childcare and free mornings. This assumed a toddler, broken sleep and very little time, and worked within that. It's the first thing that hasn't made me feel like I was failing.”
Joan M.48, Dublin
My thyroid results made sense
“I'd had the same printout explained to me twice and understood it neither time. Thrive broke down what each marker means and which ranges are worth questioning. For the first time I could read my own bloods and ask a sensible follow-up.”
Zainab A.39, Abuja
Strength, not shrinking
“Every other voice in this space has been about becoming smaller for as long as I can remember. This is the first one measuring progress by what I can carry and how I sleep. That shift has done more for my head than any diet ever did.”
Rachel B.44, Vancouver
Stress and cycle finally connected
“I kept blaming work for weeks that were, it turned out, entirely predictable. Once I tracked both side by side the pattern was impossible to miss. Now I plan the heavy weeks around it instead of wondering what's wrong with me.”

Worth every minute

Hormonal health questions

What women ask us most often.

Straight answers on perimenopause, PCOS and testing — including where the honest answer is “see a clinician” rather than a habit change.

How do I know if this is perimenopause?

Usually by pattern, not by a blood test: cycle length changing, sleep breaking, mood and temperature shifting through your late thirties or forties. Two tracked cycles give a clinician far more to work with than a single hormone panel.

My doctor said my bloods are normal but I feel awful. Now what?

Bring data, not adjectives. A symptom log across two cycles, with sleep and bleeding, changes the conversation — and makes it reasonable to ask for a second opinion or a menopause-informed clinician.

Is HRT safe?

For most women starting near menopause, benefits outweigh risks for symptom relief — but it is an individual decision based on your history. It should be discussed with a clinician who knows current guidance, not settled by a headline from 2002.

Do supplements balance hormones?

“Hormone balancing” blends are largely unevidenced. Iron, vitamin D and B12 matter when you are deficient, which is worth testing rather than assuming.

Can diet fix PCOS?

It can meaningfully improve insulin sensitivity, cycles and symptoms for many women, particularly alongside strength training. It works best as part of a diagnosed, monitored plan.

When is it urgent?

Bleeding that soaks through protection hourly, bleeding after menopause, severe pelvic pain, or any sudden dramatic change — see a doctor promptly.

Woman resting calmly in warm daylight Woman writing in a cycle-tracking journal

We will help you read your own patterns.

Most women are told their symptoms are stress, then sent away. Hormones move in cycles, so a single snapshot rarely explains anything — but two tracked cycles of bleeding, sleep, mood and energy turn a vague story into evidence a clinician can act on. Alongside that: strength work for bone, protein at each meal, and a protected sleep window. Structure first, testing second, treatment decided with someone who knows current guidance.
